UMETNIČKI PERFORMANS BORYANA ROSSA: GRAB THE PUSSY

(25. avgust, KC MAGACIN, 18:30-20:00)

Borjana Rosa živi i radi u Sofiji i Njujorku.

This is a participatory performance in which Boryana Rossa will work with Summer School participants and the general Belgrade audience to reenact selected Internet memes. The chosen memes reinforce gender stereotypes to promote political statements around the world, or just look awkward seemingly connoting gender biased attitudes. The memes were collected by the artist during the latest political protests around the world, but memes can be also proposed by the participants/audience in advance or during the performance. The action will be recorded on video and photographs will be produced off the reenactments.

The title Grab the Pussy is a paraphrase of a slogan written by a Trump female supporter, who wrote on her belly “Trump can grab my pussy.” Her statement was contrary to the critique of Trump’s misogyny widely spread in US press during the election season in 2016.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE (Statement and instructions by the artist):

The setting of the performance is a simulation of a photo studio, where people can take different roles, put on different attributes and pose for the camera. It will be similar to the photo studios which on the Bulgarian seaside, which I believe can be found around the world as well. At those places, people put on pseudo-historical costumes and have their “retro” photos taken. Please find some of those images posted in the Facebook event.

We will be re-enacting Internet memes from protests around the world, which exploit gender and other stereotypes (for instance racial, national, age) and will create a collection of those images in which we participate. This collection, when put together exposes more vividly how cliché can generate political propaganda.

Here is your role:

Please send me images (send to: bori999@gmail.com) from your countries’ protests, or political gatherings, which re-enforce stereotypes or political tropes, which we can re-enact for the photo camera. Since those are somewhat politically specific, they may need some additional explanation which we will be doing preliminarily and may be during the performance. You can participate as models in the photos. I will be directing the process and will be participating in the photos too. Please feel free to bring props that will help yu re-create your suggestions.

Please send me the photos you would like to re-enact by August 21st. We will be having some make up on site as well.
